Would you ever consider a prenuptial agreement?
News that Guy Ritchie and Madonna are set to divorce will see the subject of prenuptial arrangements brought onto the front pages again at a time when money could not be tighter. It appears that while Madonna was said to have amassed a £300 million fortune before marrying Mr Ritchie, and he was worth around £20 million in his own right, the law suggests that a 50/50 split of assets is on the cards. This would see Guy Ritchie walking away with in excess of £100 million after their eight year marriage.
While it seems as though this split has been on the cars for some time, there is statistical evidence that economic woes and employment difficulties do lead to an increase in the rate of divorces in countries such as the UK. As money becomes tighter and budgets become smaller it seems that arguments about finance and rates of spending can and do spell the end for many marriages.
In the good times it is very easy for warring couples to paper over the cracks but financial difficulties can bring old disagreements and differences to the surface. Pre-nuptial agreements can and do assist if you have a fortune to protect but at the end of the day there are no real winners.
