BSkyB on track to hit 10 million customer mark

At a time when many industries and businesses are struggling BSkyB has announced a welcome 25% increase in first-quarter profits and further new subscribers which have taken the total number to over 9 million. BSkyB is a company which many expected to fail from the very start but it is a company which has literally dragged the entertainment and satellite TV sector into the 21st century.

However, there is some concern that the longer the economic slowdown continues the more pressure traditional family customers will feel and possibly look to reduce their monthly outgoings. If this were the case then subscription channels would appear to be something families would consider cutting back on at least in the short term. The quandary now for BSkyB is whether to reduce the cost of services in order to retain subscribers in the short term with a view to increasing subscription costs in the future.

There are many areas of business such as the entertainment industry which are at serious risk of decline the longer the current economic slowdown continues and the more pressure placed upon family budgets. When money is tight it is the luxury end of the market which tends to suffer first.
