British meat inspectors set to strike at Christmas

News that Britain's meat inspectors are set to strike over the Christmas period could cost the UK meat industry literally millions of pounds at a time when money has never been tighter. Unison, the union which represents the meat inspectors, has confirmed that in a vote on strike action there was support in a ratio of 2 to 1 as the situation turns critical.

The dispute seems to centre upon a change in working practice, over time and suggestions of a £100 a week reduction in some member's salaries. While there is some conflict as to exactly what has been suggested by the industry leaders and what the union have commented upon it appears that changes have been made and are likely to be pushed through. It will be interesting to see how talks progress between the unions and management because the run up to Christmas is the vital time of the year for the UK meat industry.

After a reduction in industrial action over the last few weeks it appears that there may be more management/worker disputes hitting the headlines in the short term as company owner's battle to reduce costs and company workers battle to retain their rights.
