Are consumers being targeted by the government's pollution taxes?

As we covered in one of our recent articles there are grave concerns that UK power companies could be forced to increase costs substantially as the government look to reduce pollution into the atmosphere and introduce greener power. There are many forecasts about the potential impact this will have for the consumer and the general consensus seems to be increases in power costs to the tune of £200 per household per annum.

However, today we have seen the world shipping industry formally apply for exemption from the UK government's pollution targets, something which has already been afforded to the airline industry. These are two industries which can and do have a major impact upon pollution into the environment and taking both out of the government's scheme would seem foolish.

Slowly but surely we have seen more and more exemptions from the ambitious targets released only a few weeks ago leaving the consumer to pick up the pieces and take full cost increases on the chin. Some experts are forecasting that the government's environmental pollution targets could come under serious scrutiny over the next few months and consumers look set to rebel against taking the hardest hits.
