Tesco induced price war on the forecourts

Tesco has today announced a 3p reduction in a litre of unleaded fuel in what many see as the start of a serious price war amongst the leading UK supermarkets. Not only does this reduction catch the eyes of the mass market but it also pushes the Tesco name to the forefront of news headlines yet again. The likes of Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Asda are sure to follow suit but what will become of the independent garages across the UK?

There is serious concern that the grip which the supermarkets have over the UK fuel sector is having a major impact upon the independent suppliers across the UK. The UK supermarkets have for many years been accused of using petrol supplies as a "loss leader" to attract business to their more traditional items and services. This has been refuted on a number of occasions and the government has found no evidence of such activity.

Slowly but surely the UK high street is being decimated and many believe that supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons are some of the main reasons for this. They are able to buy in massive bulk and undercut any of their competitors on literally any range or any service which is stamping out competition in the smaller operators.
