Have we seen the January sales come early on the high street?
As John Lewis for one reports a huge surge in sales in the run-up to Christmas there are mixed opinions as to what the immediate future holds for the UK high street. Those who are suggesting that the January sales will continue in the same vein would appear to be wide of the mark with many of the opinion that the January sales actually came early, before and just after Christmas. If this is the case then the next few months on the UK high street could be dire and severely impact both profitability and cash flow.
We are seeing a common theme over the last few weeks in that the larger stores are reporting increased turnover and sales while many of the smaller operations on the high street continue to struggle. Whether we are seeing a flight to quality, in that UK consumers are concerned about the future of smaller operations, or their increased marketing and promotional campaigns have been successful remains to be seen. Whatever the case it would appear that a substantial polarisation is appearing on the UK high street which is something nobody had hoped to see.
