JD Wetherspoon reduces a pint of beer to 99p
In a move to attract attention and increased business to a sector which is suffering from the economic slowdown it has been revealed that JD Wetherspoon will be offering a pint of Greene King IPA for just 99p. This takes the price of a pint of beer back to levels not seen since 1989 and while limited just to Greene King IPA it is sure to catch the eye of drinkers around the UK.
At the same time the leading pub chain has also announced a cut in the cost of pub meals as a way to attract more and more customers into their outlets across the country. The offer of reduced meals and reduced beverage prices will begin on Monday and run for an indefinite period of time. Whether this move will help or hinder some of the smaller operators in the market remains to be seen but at this moment in time it is literally every man for themselves.
Whether the sector will be able to force some assistance from the UK government in the form of reduced duty on drink is debatable as the 99p a pint promotion must be running at a loss for the business.
