Rail bosses announce extortionate 11% ticket price rises
The UK rail industry is today charged with hitting consumers when they are down after the announcement of ticket price rises of up to 11%. At a time when the government is keen to see as many of the UK population transfer to public transport as possible, this 11% inflation busting rise is the last thing they need. There had been a feeling across the UK that due to higher tax charges aimed at those owning motor vehicles many of the UK population had been considering a switch to public transport. However, this latest round of ticket price increases could well undo all of the hard work of recent times.
Many UK consumers do not realise that a number of the UK transport networks still receive substantial taxpayer subsidies even after more than 10 years in public ownership. To then see ticket price increases of over 10% would appear to be another kick in the teeth for the UK taxpayer who has been haemorrhaging cash for some time. It is also disappointing to see that the transport regulators have not come down harder on the various UK rail networks as they must have been aware of these intended price rises.
