Comic Relief has its work cut out this year
While Comic Relief has become something of a national treasure, raising hundreds of millions of pounds for worthy causes, there are concerns that tonight's event could be overshadowed by the depressed economic situation in the UK and around the world. Historically the event has managed to avoid being affected by economic uncertainty in the country but after the recent falls it seems inevitable it will be more difficult to raise substantial funds this year.
The issue with Comic Relief has highlighted the problems which charities across the UK are currently experiencing with donations in many cases disappearing overnight. It has also brought into question the falling commitment from the UK government which has been reducing charitable donations and charitable tax arrangements for some time. At a time when the government is literally pouring billions upon billions of pounds into the banking sector it seems rather perverse that many charities around the UK are literally trying to survive on "breadcrumbs". If the UK authorities were unwilling to increase funding prior to the ongoing recession there is little chance of charitable donations from the taxpayer's pool increasing in the short term.
There are serious concerns that we could see some charities effectively "go to the wall" before the UK economy turns upwards again.
