Can you really expect £2000 to scrap your old car?

The latest wheeze from the UK government suggests that motorist with cars over nine years old would be eligible to receive a £2000 discount on a new environmentally friendly car if they decide to scrap their old car. This all sounds very good for the UK consumer and interestingly it has already been tried with great success in Germany. But will you really be able to receive £2000 for the old heap in your driveway?

While there is no doubt that the UK government has been championing the environment and carbon emissions over the last few years the cost of a £2000 car discount scheme could be enormous. There is no way that car retailers in the UK will take even the smallest hit after the most difficult few years the industry has ever seen. Do not forget that we recently saw the government stalling on a rescue package for car manufacturers and car retailers in the UK, although on the other hand they appear to be effectively pushing business their way in the future.

As with any scheme where money seems to be available for "free" it is very unlikely that the £2000 payment to scrap your car would be straightforward. You will probably need to acquire a certain type of car, from a certain retailer at a certain price. Nothing is ever straightforward in the world of taxation, government expenditure and the new car market!
