Tracing that old insurance policy could prove worthwhile
It is no secret that hundreds of millions of pounds of unclaimed insurance policies are locked away in the vaults of many insurance companies in the UK. These are policies which have yet to be claimed with the underlying customers having lost contact, moved away or possibly died. When you consider the figures involved it is no surprise that locating old insurance policies has become something of a lucrative pastime for many companies up and down the country. So where do you start?
The Internet has opened up many opportunities for those looking to trace old policies and potentially cash them in. Whether part of an estate, or perhaps still owned by the underlying customer, there are hundreds of millions of pounds at stake just waiting to be claimed. If you have lost the details of your policy you can search for the old insurance company name and see if they still exist or whether they are part of a larger group. The Financial Services Authority holds many details about historic insurance company names and should be able to assist you or at least give you a starting point.
If you are lucky enough to find your lost policy, or policy associated with an estate, you will need to present solid proof of identity, but this should not be difficult.
