Insurance claims flood in

Up to 8,600 insurance claims are estimated to have flooded in from anxious policyholders following yesterday's wet weather. After torrential rain and flooding plagued a number of areas across the UK, Abbey Home Insurance warned that the damage wrought by the freak conditions had come as a "shock" to many people. The insurer estimates that some 3,200 claims for flood damage were made yesterday alone.Such a level would account for a large proportion of the estimated 13,700 insurance claims made each year as a result of such damage.Yesterday's downpours are also thought to have resulted in 5,100 claims related to storm damage and a further 210 claims for lightning damage, Abbey said.Commenting on the carnage, Abbey's head of insurance marketing, Prasad Shastri, said: "Although warnings were issued that there could be potential flooding, the scale of the damage has come as quite a shock. "Many people will be looking to make claims on their home insurance so it is advisable that everyone who would like to make a claim look into doing so as quickly as possible."However Abbey also stressed that some 257,000 claims were declined each year as a result of under insurance. The need to obtain adequate protection has been echoed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which has issued advice to homeowners who have suffered flood damage."These events highlight just how important insurance protection is," said ABI's head of property, Jane Milne."If you have been affected by flooding, contact your insurance company. Their priority is to deal with all claims as quickly as possible," she added.
