Brit drivers over-rely on hearsay, car insurer warns

Britons who rely on received wisdom and hearsay about motor insurance cover rather than studying the small print of their policies are risking a severe financial hit, according to a car insurance provider. In a study conducted by swiftcover.com, 36 per cent of respondents assumed they would be covered in the event of a crash when they were behind the wheel of their partners or friend's car. In fact, this is not the case and cover for this eventuality differs from policy to policy. Meanwhile, ten per cent of those surveyed thought that they would be covered if they accidently put the wrong kind of fuel in their car - despite the fact that "many policies won't cover this". Tina Shortle of swiftcover.com said the findings highlighted the need to pay close attention to the terms offered by cover before opting for a policy. She commented: "While choosing the lowest price car insurance policy is most people's objective, it is also important to know exactly what is and isn't covered. "Drivers make a lot of assumptions about their policies, so it's best to read all terms and conditions carefully and to regularly review the terms."
