Insurer issues car headlight warning
Four in five drivers do not know the Highway Code's guidelines on using headlights, esure said today.According to the insurer, around one million motorists have also suffered either a road accident or a near-miss due to not turning their lights on.Analysis from esure also shows that "more and more" local authorities are turning off some of their streetlights at night in order to save money - a trend which could put still more drivers at risk.Mike Pickard at esure said: "It can be easy to forget to turn on your lights, especially when you've been driving for long periods of time or after you have made a stop, perhaps for petrol."He added: "Drivers must be extra vigilant during the winter and especially in areas where councils have turned off street lighting, to ensure they are driving with the correct lights at all times. Being visible on the roads and having the best visibility possible are both crucial for safe driving."Over 3,000 die due to road accidents each year, official government figures show.
