More spin and intrigue regarding car scrapping scheme
Despite the fact that Alistair Darling has apparently taken control of the scheme which will see £2000 paid to those scrapping cars over nine years old, there are conflicting reports today regarding the Treasury's stance. With Peter Mandelson behind the scheme, there are concerns that rumours were circulated to put pressure on Alistair Darling to make the scheme a centrepiece of his forthcoming budget.
Interestingly while Alistair Darling was reported to have accepted the scheme last week there was a very different spin coming from the Treasury today. The car scrapping allowance is "one of a number of proposals being considered" by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and nothing is certain at this moment in time. Apparently Alistair Darling is concerned at the cost of the scheme although as we touched on yesterday, anyone scrapping their car and receiving the £2000 discount on a new vehicle will still have to find substantial funds themselves.
Yet again we have seen UK government snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as the constant battle between number 10 and number 11 Downing Street continues. Despite being the best of friends when they took office it is widely regarded that Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown are just on speaking terms at best with their friendship apparently left in tatters. However, when you consider the battles between number 10 and number 11 Downing Street in the past, perhaps this is now the "norm"?
