Long-term investment strategies still deliver
Despite the fact that the UK stock market has fallen, the property market is under pressure and more and more people are struggling to meet their monthly needs, there is still no doubt that a long-term investment strategy can deliver if administered correctly. Many people believe that a long-term strategy is effectively buying an investment and leaving it forever and a day without a review. This is wrong!
During the cycle of any investment market there will be times to buy and times to sell, as well as a time to sit on the sidelines. Even the best long-term strategies need to be tweaked at certain times of the year and certain times of the cycle, even if this means disposing of one or more assets and repositioning into a different field or a different sector. Over the last 20 years we have seen a gradual increase in the value of property in the UK, a general increase in the value of stock market investments and the rise and fall of the dot-com sector.
Within one sentence you have examples two long-term strategies which have worked and a short-term strategy which saw some investors make significant profits while others were left destitute after the fall. Positioning your investments for the longer term is vital to your success but you will also need to tweak them every now and again.
