Has the age of the entrepreneur passed us by?

While it may seem strange to suggest that a recession could in any way offer the conditions where entrepreneurs could prosper, history has shown that many viable businesses have risen from the ashes of a significant economic downturn. However, the recession we are experiencing at the moment is very different from anything we have seen before and not only have business levels collapsed but funding for businesses and entrepreneurs has on the whole disappeared.

There is no doubt that we will see viable businesses hit the wall over the next 12 months, we will see entrepreneurs in high profile bankruptcy cases and we will hear of more bad news in the small-business sector. However, the UK, more than many other countries in the world, has a history of fighting back and many of the great entrepreneurs have come from Britain.

While the fact at the moment is that liquidity is not available across the board, there is no doubt that funding, either bank funding or investor funding, for viable new business ideas is still there. If the idea is good enough and offers an attractive risk reward ratio for the future there is no doubt that funding will be forthcoming in due course. This may be a week down the line, one month down the line or one year down the line but entrepreneurs in the UK will rise again at some stage.
