British Airways to sell advertising space

In a move which smacks of desperation, British Airways has today announced a move which will see the company sell advertising space on boarding cards. While there are potentially two ways to look at this, one, that it is a very useful and potentially lucrative way of using space on the company's boarding cards, or two, that the company is so desperate for cash that it will do anything.

It is no secret that the company has suffered a serious decline in passenger volumes over the last few months and ultimately the volatile price of oil and turn down in business has hit the company's balance sheet very hard. A number of cost saving initiatives have been introduced although today's announcement would suggest that further cost-cutting and new income flows are needed.

When you consider that British Airways is among the elite of the worldwide airline industry we can only assume that the rest of the sector is under extreme pressure. Just a few years ago it would have been inconceivable to suggest or even think that British Airways could struggle to survive in the future, and while it is highly likely the company will survive in some shape or form, the future is as grim now as it ever has been.
