Ryanair critical of Manchester airport
Budget airline, Ryanair, has today confirmed that nine of the company's 10 routes which currently operate from Manchester airport will be closed or switched to other airports in the UK. This move comes after a prolonged period of discussion with Manchester airport regarding costs which ultimately Ryanair does not believe to be fair in the current economic environment.
Slowly but surely the last few months has seen a significant shrinkage in the size of the budget airline industry as cost pressure and falling passenger numbers continue to hit home. Ryanair is not the only budget airline in the UK to be hit by growing costs and reduced profitability and ultimately the budget airline industry we will see after the recession will be very different to the one we saw before the recession.
When you see the likes of British Airways struggling to make ends meet in the higher end of the market we can only guess what is going on under the surface. Even though many of the UK population continue to holiday abroad, more and more people are becoming cost-conscious and scouring the market for the best deal. This has injected enormous pressure and competition into the budget airline industry where only the fittest will survive.
