UK government urged to build new Scottish rail link

The UK government has today been urged to construct a £34 billion rail line between London and Scotland after a study by Network Rail Limited. The plans are for a 200 mph train link which would allow passengers to travel between Glasgow and London in just over two hours. There would also be links to Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Heathrow airport and Network Rail Limited believes this would bring in an extra £55 billion in revenue over the next 60 years.

Aside from the direct revenue (i.e. ticket money) the new line would bring, there are also substantial financial and economic benefits for England and Scotland. To travel between London and Scotland in less than 2 1/2 hours is unheard of at this moment in time although a dedicated rail line would see this dream become a reality. While the £34 billion figure sounds very high we have to remember this would be a high-tech rail link with trains able to travel in excess of 200 mph. At this moment in time it is unclear where the money would come from but ultimately it seems as though taxpayers are in line to foot the bill yet again.
