Will Yahoo follow Google out of China?
Over the last few hours it has been revealed that not only was Google (China) the victim of a sustained cyber attack, allegedly from Chinese state employees, but Yahoo (China) was also a target of the attack. Google is currently considering its position in the country with the potential that it could abandon its Chinese operation because of strict censorship by the Chinese authorities. But will Yahoo follow suit?
It is rumoured that the two parties have been in discussions regarding their various cyber attacks attempting to clarify whether they were a result of system failure or the extreme pressure exerted by the cyberspace attackers. Whatever does happen, the US authorities will at some point fight back and have already sent a strongly worded letter of complaint to the Chinese authorities.
As we have mentioned on numerous occasions, the Internet is now an integral part of the worldwide economy and a vital element of the worldwide trade system. China is now one of the more prominent economies around the world and its partnership with the US has been the focal point of the worldwide economy for some time.
If these two powerhouses were to go their separate ways, even in the short term, it is likely that the Chinese economy would suffer to a greater extent. Censorship in China has been present for decades but attempts to interfere with the World Wide Web appear for many to be one step too far.
