Ethical investors reap rewards

Ethical funds are proving to be winners for investors who choose to listen to their conscience, according to recent figures from Investment, Life & Pensions Moneyfacts.Ethical funds are surging ahead of their non-ethical competitors - providing 18.4 per cent returns over a year and 57.2 per cent over three years, compared to 13.7 per cent and 52.4 per cent respectively from mainstream traditional funds. The average ethical fund was also found to outperform the FTSE 100 index across the board, and index-trackers over one and ten year periods. In the long term, the non-ethical returns did pull slightly ahead - but only by a margin of about six per cent over ten years.Richard Eagling, editor of Investment, Life & Pensions Moneyfacts, said: "The strong investment returns enjoyed by ethical funds in recent years have helped to shatter the misguided belief that ethical investments will always underperform traditional investment funds and that sustainable business practices restrict company growth. "Instead, ethical funds have outperformed both their non-ethical rivals and the FTSE 100 over the last three years. "These results provide compelling evidence that those companies who adopt sustainable practices should be tomorrow's winners."
