Fishermen Hit By Soaring Fuel Bills

Despite the reported doubling of fuel costs for UK fishermen it has been reported that the government are unable or unwilling to consider subsidies for the industry. After a meeting with their Scottish counterparts the disappointing announcement was made but there are further discussions planned to see what practical assistance can be offered.

Yet again the Scottish Ministers have attempted to connect the problems of the fishermen to the extra revenues created from north sea oil, something which can be replicated across the UK. Many observers feel that the fishing industry is again being used as a pawn in the Westminster / Scottish government power struggle. While there is no doubt that the fishing industry is struggling with the rising cost of fuel, there are many other sectors of the economy which are being hit just as hard, if not harder. There is also the fact that recent EU legislation has again reduced the quota numbers for the Scottish fishing industry.

The UK Treasury seems to be under severe pressure from all areas of business and commerce with more and more groups stepping forward asking for direct assistance. However, with a lack of funding for the UK budget already a worry there seems little left over to help the range of good causes hitting the headlines.
