Are Money Markets Stalling Again?

The shares of media outfit Informa suffered a 9% fall yesterday with investors concerned that a much rumoured bid approach may hit trouble with corporate finance still tight in the money markets. A multi-billion pound deal involving the acquisition of shares in the company and refinancing the debts of £1.25 billion looks more unlikely by the day. After Providence Equity Partners and Carlyle Group, the private equity firms, made a recent approach it seemed that a deal could be on the cards.

Over the last few days it has become apparent to market observers that they would be highly unlikely to be able to fund the deal without third party assistance. However, the media market has seen something of mark down over recent weeks with signs that big players in the industry are looking to reduce their marketing budgets.

While Informa is more of an information company, producing an array of leading academic journals and organising trade fairs, the slowdown in the sector is having an impact across the board. There had been additional interest in the group, although a merger with United Business Media was called off when the parties could not agree terms, shortening the field somewhat.
