Globespan Airways Fined For Flying 'Technically Unfit' Plane
In a move which will dismay many in the world of aviation it was today confirmed that Globespan Airways, which trades as FlyGlobespan, has been fined for flying a plane between New York and Liverpool which they knew to have faulty reading dials. The 6,000 mile round trip had 20 paying passengers onboard who were obviously unaware of the action in the cockpit.
It seems as though two engine thrust indicators were registering engines out of action when they were working, hence leaving the crew to manually adjust the throttle on the engines with the assistance of another gauge. While there were no issues with the flight itself, other than flying the plane with dials which were known to be faulty, the airlines was fined £5,000 at Southward Crown court.
Even there was no suggestion that passenger's lives were put in danger the company admitted that there had been a technical breach of the aviation code book. They argued in court that the faulty dials were only one way of receiving the information need to fly the plane and were not central to the issue.
Times are very hard in the budget airline industry and prosecutions like this, even though it was only a technical breach of the rules, do not help the image of the sector.
