So Who Is Talking To British Energy?
Two weeks after the supposed done deal with EDF collapsed it has been revealed that British Energy is still in talks with a mystery party with regards to a possible 'transaction'. While Bill Coley, the Chief Exec of British Energy, was unwilling to divulge further information it seems as though that party may well be EDF - despite public attempts to distance itself from the failed deal.
There is a great suspicion that the UK government are trying to pull the strings behind the scenes, desperate for the £4 billion plus windfall a takeover would bring and also the strong funding EDF could bring to the table for the future. Quite why the government seems so desperate to jump into bed with EDF is a strange one but they certainly do not seem willing to let this deal go.
Unless British Energy is able to find a well financed partner this would put the UK nuclear program into doubt. The authorities do not have sufficient funds to see the project through without a partner although there would likely be a number of financial incentives if a private company was to take much of the strain. This story is far from over, but who is writing it?
