Even John Lewis Is Slowing Expansion Plans
News that John Lewis stores, seen by many as the bell weather of the UK retail sector, is struggling to fulfil its current expansion plans does not bode well for the immediate future. The problem appears to be with the property companies and the fact there are less and less retail developments looking for key 'anchor' tenants such as John Lewis. This will mean the group having to curtail plans to roll out an array of new stores across the UK.
The group is well know for its openness with regards to business and issues a weekly report on sales together with a view on the future. This report is awaited with eagerness by many retail analysts and is often quoted in reports about the UK retail sector. So what next for the darling of the retail sector?
Sales at John Lewis have fallen by around two percent over the last week, a trend which is likely to continue for some time yet. However, closer analysis shows that individual store performances are very different with the main Oxford Street store still performing better than the average but places such as Nottingham seeing sales fall by more that 14 percent. Keep an eye out for John Lewis sales figures in the future for a good indication of the UK market as a whole.
