Was T5 worth all of that money and bother?

News that the performance of Heathrow is as low now as it has ever been in recent history does not back up the wild promises of BAA and British Airways prior to the opening of the 'white elephant' that is Terminal 5, Heathrow. So what is going wrong now?

A report by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed that during the months of April, May and June nearly four out of ten plans were delayed in some way at the airport. This is against a figure from just five years ago which showed that three quarters of all flights arrived on time. While the main problems were associated with the opening of T5 and the ensuing problems, this seems to have dragged on a lot longer than many people had thought.

The £4.3 billion terminal debacle led to 500 flights being cancelled by British Airways in March alone and an astounding 23,000 bags 'misplaced'. Despite assurances that these were just teething troubles there are still some hiccups with the system even today and it is still not running as had been hoped. Some flight destinations saw delays averaging between just over 30 minutes and 3 hours with places such as Bangladesh suffering more than most!
