Popular stock market terms explained
While the vast majority of people in the UK will have direct or indirect exposure to the UK stock market, many of the terms and phrases used in the market can be very difficult to understand. In order to assist those who want to know more about the markets we hereby list some of the more common words, terms and phrases used in the markets of today.
Bull market
This is a term used to describe a market which is moving higher and one where the mood is one of a positive nature. Bull markets can last anything from a couple of years to decades in extreme circumstances.
Bear market
This is the exact opposite of a Bull market and used to describe a market in which the trend is downwards and the mood is one of fear and caution. Again, the length of a Bear market can vary in line with a Bull market.
FTSE100 index
This is the more popular index to be mentioned in the financial press covering the top 100 companies in the UK which are listed on the stock market. Each stock is given a weighting which will depend upon the size of the company in relation to the rest of the market.
