British Airways and Qantas in merger talks

British Airways and Australian airline giant Qantas have today announced they are in talks regarding a possible merger of the two operations. If successful this would create the world's first global airline group which would have a significant presence in every single area of the world. While it is well-known that British Airways has been on the lookout for a merger partner for some time, the deal with the Australian giant has taken some by surprise.

There will no doubt be the obligatory regulatory clearance required but it seems as though the two groups have already done their homework and are sure any potential merger would go through. The last few months has seen a number of major airlines struggle, many seek protection from their creditors and a number go out of business. It seems very much that mergers are the way forward in the short term as a way of reducing cost bases and ramping up exposure to all areas of the world.

If the British Airways merger does go through this is unlikely to be the last in the sector with many US carriers known to be in the market for non-US merger partners. Indeed, the British Airways announcement today may well flush out a potential bidder for the group as a whole.
