Bookmakers set to prosper in difficult times
While we have seen the banking sector under severe pressure, retailers on the high street cutting back on costs and many sportswear companies feeling the pinch, is there really anywhere in UK economy which is safe?
While not to say that the bookmaking sector has not been impacted by the downturn, it appears that more and more UK gamblers are enjoying a flutter even in these difficult times. Whether they are looking for that one big win to bail themselves out or using off-line and online gambling facilities to take their minds off everyday life, volume numbers in the industry have held up surprisingly well.
When you compare the relatively upbeat tempo from the bookmaking industry against that of the downbeat situation in the casino sector, it is again difficult to understand why bookmakers are faring so well. However, when you consider the increased number of racing events, more high-profile football games, the World Cup in 2010 and other high visibility sporting events, perhaps it is not such a surprise. The bookmaking industry has reinvented itself time and time again to take into account new sports and new trends in order to attract more and more customers to the sector.
