Moveme.com slams stamp duty reform

Around eight in ten Britons do not feel encouraged to move home due to the government's recent suspension of stamp duty, a new poll from Moveme.com suggests.Plans to scrap the tax for homes worth £175,000 and under were announced by communities minister Hazel Blears earlier this week - however, the industry website suggests that this reform does not go far enough. The poll also found that a further 73 per cent of people "do not believe" that the property market would be boosted by the government's latest move.House prices have fallen by over ten per cent over the past year - while mortgage approvals numbers have dropped by 70 per cent.Keith McNeilly, co-founder of Moveme.com, said: "The government's rescue package, released this week, has failed to meet the expectations of much of the industry and aspiring home buyers. "While a revision to a lower stamp duty band is welcome, the government has not gone far enough to make any significant impact on our ailing property market.
