UK homeless figures rise as more homes repossessed

It has been revealed that 392 households were made homeless between April and September 2008 compared to 699 in the previous 12 months. While the statistics appear to indicate an increase in homeless numbers throughout the UK there are hopes that the UK authorities will be a little swifter than normal in their actions to find homes for those who are falling behind on their mortgages. This comes at a time when the UK government has still to put in place a number of safety elements to ensure those falling behind with their mortgages are given ample opportunity to turn the situation around.

While the situation in the UK is nowhere near the level seen in America, where a massive amount of sub-prime mortgage holders have been evicted onto the streets, there are concerns that the situation in the UK is set to worsen considerably. Figures for temporary accommodation throughout the UK are also rising with more than 10,500 people making use of temporary accommodation service in December 2008, a 7% increase on the corresponding period in 2007.

The UK government has been attempting to assist the financial sector at the headline stage, via the banking system, but more and more we are seeing the UK consumer struggle to make ends meet and more and more people losing their homes. Perhaps it is time to direct more finance towards the temporary housing system in the UK which is set to be overrun in the short to medium term.
