Tenants may receive more assistance where properties are repossessed

The Scottish government has today revealed plans to try and assist up to 300 families a year who are caught up in the repossession of their homes even though they have maintained their rental payments in line with their agreement. It is known that a number of landlords across the UK have failed to inform their mortgage companies that they have tenants who are paying rent and when the landlords fall behind with their mortgage payments these tenants are made homeless.

However, the Scottish government is looking to give tenants the right to make an appeal direct to the courts if repossession orders are in the pipeline with the suggestion they could be given more time to find alternative accommodation. While the proposals are still at a very early stage and unlikely to be wrapped up in the short to medium term, this is a problem which is set to become more commonplace as the recession continues to bite in the UK property sector.

Quite how the government would finance these plans remains to be seen as ultimately somebody need to pay for the "notice period" between the repossession order and tenants being forced to move on.
