When a dream home turns into a nightmare buy
Nearly half of homebuyers find that once they have moved into their new property, their dream home may have hidden horrors that they had not previously known about, according to new research.A survey by Abbey Mortgages revealed that 21 per cent of homeowners said it was only after moving in that a little more snooping showed evidence that cowboys had botched the interior design. An additional four per cent also discovered that the exterior also needed work they had not noticed.Fourteen per cent of people realised that their new neighbours were not going to be easy to tolerate, with 13 per cent of new homeowners in the south-east of England aggrieved by unexpected next-door noise. An astonishing 11 per cent of people settling in Wales said their new neighbours were just downright nasty.Houses in Yorkshire were the most disappointing, with 59 per cent of people uncovering a nasty surprise they had been unaware of when making an offer and 42 per cent ruing the lack of research on their new purchase.Perhaps the news is unsurprising as the research also showed that Brits put more time into considering their next holiday purchase than they do viewing their new home prior to agreeing a deal. While the average buyer spends just 96 minutes viewing their property before making an offer, Brits are happy to while away an average of 139 minutes browsing for their next getaway.
