There is every place like home

While mortgage advisers are touting Spain as a good investment for both the long-term and the short-term, Brits are put off a good property investment by the fact that too many of their own already haunt the Spanish shores. While nearly half of all mortgage advisers believe that Spain is the best long-term property investment in the world, 82 per cent of UK consumers said they would be most put off buying a home there by the proliferation of British ex-pats, according to a survey by GE Money Home Lending. Despite this, Spain still remains the top location for holiday homeowners, with its climate the most important factor for the 36 per cent of people who would consider living there. Inexpensive travel and bargain property prices were also cited as popular reasons to relocate to Spain. "Spain's popularity with Britons is both its main advantage and its biggest downfall," commented Gerry Bell of GE Money Home Lending. "Many are attracted to the country because they know others who have settled there or are familiar with the destination. Others see it as a good long-term investment or simply enjoy the climate and culture. "However many see Spain - rightly or wrongly - as being a 'Little Britain on the Costas' and are keen to find somewhere with its own distinct culture and feel, rather than one which is so heavily influenced by a big ex-pat population."
