80pc of students “don’t have enough money to live on”
A survey from Save the Student has found that as many as 8 out of 10 students don’t have enough money to live on.
Out of the 2300 students who partook in the survey, one in five also admitted they have turned to gambling in order to try to get hold of extra cash, while one in four said they would consider selling their body for medical trials in return for money. Worryingly the same amount also admitted they would consider a role in the adult entertainment industry.
There was also a smaller group, some 2pc, who said they would consider contacting a payday loan company as a viable option to get hold of extra cash in times of hardship.
The rising costs of living are hitting everyone hard, and for students, many of whom are without a regular income, this is proving to be a major problem.
More students are taking out part time jobs alongside their studies in order to raise extra funds. However the last 12 months has seen sharp rises in monthly outgoings, with the average student spending an extra £77 per week compared to a year ago. The rising cost of renting was one of the main factors, and figures from Save the Student indicated an average rise of £128 over the same period.
