Record numbers switching electricity providers
21/01/2014
A record number of electricity customers changed their supplier in November, according figures measured by ElectraLink.
ElectraLink, which measures data for the industry has released figures showing that more than 615,000 people switched electricity suppliers in November. The highest number since records began. However, the figures regarding the number of those switching their gas suppliers have yet to be announced.
These high levels of switching are highly likely as a result of all of the major suppliers announcing price rises in the same month. This theory is further backed up by the same figures showing the number of people switching electricity suppliers in December fell back to 391,000 as the government acted to reduces the rises in energy bills by reducing ‘green levies’.
One of the biggest benefactors of these figures has been smaller suppliers, with 26% of switchers moving to a supplier outside of the big six. However, these figures represent a spike against a long-term trend which has actually seen fewer people switching energy suppliers. Therefore, it remains to be seen if customers will continue to switch, or if they will return to the general trend of fewer people switching suppliers.
