British Gas to introduce Smart meters
In a move which will ultimately help UK consumers, UK businesses and British Gas it has been revealed that British Gas will fit over 1 million Smart meters in homes across the UK during 2010, creating 2600 new jobs. It has also been revealed that this move will save in excess of £1 billion over the next 10 years, the majority of which should filter through to cuts in gas bills in the years ahead.
These are simple but highly effective Smart meters which will be placed in prominent areas of the home and allow users to monitor how much gas they are using at any one time. They will also be able to record the cost of gas for any period of time and therefore hopefully be able to adapt their gas usage to take account of peak times and wasted gas. In total British Gas expects to install over 2 million Smart meters by 2012 in a move which has been welcomed by the UK government, the regulator and eco-friendly associations.
However, for UK consumers the proof will be in the pudding i.e. a reduction in gas bills in the years to come and the hope that British Gas does not retain all cost savings. Time will tell whether UK consumers will actually save money with this move!
