TalkTalk refuses to accept Digital Economy Bill
In a bitter blow for the UK government, UK ISP TalkTalk has today refused to accept some of the more draconian measures introduced by the Digital Economy Bill. The main measures which the company disagrees with relate to consumers needing to protect themselves from hackers and the fact that many consumers could become inadvertently embroiled in large-scale computer piracy by unknown third parties.
As we have covered in some of our earlier articles, in simple terms consumers will need to prove their innocence rather than the authorities prove their guilt. This would appear to go against all of the earlier laws passed in the UK and is one aspect which has the UK Internet service provider industry up in arms. Whether any other Internet service providers will follow the lead of TalkTalk and refuse to accept some of the "draconian" measures introduced by the Digital Economy Bill remains to be seen but there is widespread concern about the future.
Despite the fact that the UK government was forced to water down various aspects of the Digital Economy Bill it is still a law which is very much on the side of the business and against consumers. Whether we will see further changes in the short to medium term remains to be seen.
