Scottish government warns of power cuts
The Scottish government has this week stepped forward to warn the Scottish population of potential power cuts in the short to medium term due to the very dry weather currently sweeping the nation. It is not a well-known fact, but 20% of Scottish energy comes from renewable sources such as solar, wind and wave power compared to just 5% for the UK as a whole.
While it is unlikely that large areas of Scotland will go without power for prolonged periods, there will be periodic reductions in power supply in some areas of Scotland until weather patterns return to "normal". Depending upon which side of the argument you stand, the issue of potential power cuts in Scotland because of the weather at the moment could strengthen or weaken the Scottish government's policy of increasing reliability on renewable energy.
On the one hand, reducing dependence upon the national grid could be dangerous while increasing the number of renewable energy sources up-and-down Scotland could in many cases reduce the chances of power cuts in the future. It is not so much the fact that power is not available, because there is more than enough power in the UK, but the fact that some remote areas of Scotland may not be able to access emergency power as quickly as required in certain circumstances.
