RAC warns of road pricing system in the future
A pay as you drive system for the UK road network is inevitable according to the RAC foundation charity which has cited recent forecasts suggesting an increase of 33% in the traffic on UK roads by 2025. The subject of pay as you go driving is something which has been rebuffed by various governments in the past and indeed voters in the UK have given this particular idea the thumbs down. So will the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government be brave enough to bring in pay as you go driving?
Is unlikely that we will see the introduction of levies on new UK roads within this particular parliament although it is an issue which needs to be addressed, especially when you consider that spending on UK transport, and roads in particular, will be cut in line with every other department in the UK government. However, the coalition government has stated that while existing road will remain toll-free there is a chance that new road developments could introduce new charging structures with the M6 toll road in the Midlands put forward as an example for the future. As the cost of motoring in the UK, including road tax, insurance and petrol, continues to rise, there are fears that effectively UK motorists will be priced off the roads.
