Amazon hits the UK grocery market
After dominating the UK online shopping market, Amazon has today opened its own grocery delivery business in direct competition with the likes of Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's. From today, 20,000 different items will be available via the grocery business including products such as tea, crisps, spices, biscuits and pasta to name but a few, which will be delivered directly by Amazon. Fresh and chilled food items will be delivered directly from the company's suppliers with many experts believing this could increase price competition in the UK supermarket sector.
There is some scepticism as to whether Amazon has the ability and experience to deliver groceries in the UK although there is no doubt the company has the infrastructure already in place. It will be interesting to see how the likes of Tesco respond to this very aggressive move and indeed whether UK consumers will benefit in the short, medium and longer term. Any new competition in this particular arena will be welcomed by consumers in the UK who have on the whole seen the cost of their weekly shop increase year-on-year for some time.
More and more we are seeing how the Internet has a major direct impact upon the everyday lives of many people in the UK and the benefits which it can bring.
