US government to introduce £9 fee for electronic visas
Visitors to America will face an additional £9 fee from the US authorities from 8 September as the government looks to raise money for the American tourism industry. The fee will affect visitors from 36 nations as well as those who apply for the electronic system for travel authorisation which was put in place after 9/11. There are concerns that the US authorities are looking to milk overseas visitors to the country and appear set to make it more expensive and more difficult than ever.
It will be interesting to see how tourists react to this new charge which will come into place on 8 September 2010 and whether indeed it will impact upon visitor numbers. International travellers have had a very difficult few years as the cost of air travel continues to rise, new regulations come into place and yet more paperwork is required to travel abroad. Surely the authorities should be looking to reduce the cost of travel and reduce the amount of paperwork not increase it further!
The US government's plans have already been criticised by the European Union although there is every chance that similar charges could be introduced to those travelling to the EU in the future.
