Ofcom set to hit silent nuisance callers

The telecoms regulator Ofcom has this week received more powers from the UK government which will allow it to impose fines of up to £2 million on companies found guilty of the dreaded nuisance silent phone calls. Thousands of people in the UK have fallen victim to the nuisance silent phone call which is very often caused by marketing telephone machines which are able to ring a large amount of telephone numbers at one time and then answer the first to pick up the phone.

Those who pick up the phone after an earlier reply will very often be greeted with silence which can be very distressing in some situations. Prior to the increase in the maximum fine, now £2 million, companies faced a maximum fine of just £50,000 which it would appear was not enough to put off repeat offenders. These telephone techniques are used by many companies in the UK and while not all companies will leave you hanging on with a silent phone call there have been more reports of this over the last couple of years.

If you are the victim of a silent nuisance phone call then where possible you should take notice of the company involved, as many will give the name automatically, and report them to the authorities.
