Record £63 million compensation bill lands on nPower mat
UK energy giant nPower has this week been hit with a £63 million compensation bill in relation to errors in the company's computerised billing system in 2007. It is believed that as a consequence of these errors a number of gas customers were charged for fuel which they did not use with the situation only coming to light some time later. So what has nPower agreed to do?
The company has agreed to fund a £63 million compensation package which will see around 1.8 million UK customers receive an average £35 compensation payment. Those who have been affected by the miscalculations should begin to receive letters this week as the company continues the process of calculating individual household compensation payments. These payments will be in the form of refundable vouchers which can be cashed in at any post office and will come in very handy for those looking towards Christmas!
Aside from the compensation bill of £63 million the company fully expects to be hit by a deluge of telephone calls in the weeks ahead as customers look to confirm whether or not they are entitled to compensation. Ironically the change in the nPower billing system may actually have worked in favour of some customers in the UK at the time with the company introducing fixed monthly payments while bringing in lower prices and introductory discounts.
