Toyota extends car recall program

While the fact that more than 7 million cars are to be recalled in the US alone was a major body blow for Toyota, it has been revealed today that the recall program will be extended to Europe and China. The recall was sparked by the reliability of accelerator pedals used in a number of models which were sold around the world.

At this point in time it is uncertain as to whether any UK models will fall into the recall bracket that the company appears adamant it will take no chances with regards to the safety of their customers. It is unclear as to what exactly prompted the questioning of the reliability factor associated with the accelerator pedals but one thing is for sure this will be a very expensive and a public relations nightmare for the company.

Despite the fact that 2009 was one of the better years for the worldwide car industry 2010 has not exactly started on a positive footing. The UK government is set to rein in the car scrappage scheme and now we have Toyota potentially recalling over 7 million vehicles around the world. Can the situation get any worse for the worldwide car industry?
