Get yourself ready for more junk mail in the future!
Yesterday's announcement that the Royal Mail had agreed a 6.9% pay increase with the union bosses was well received across-the-board. While there have been concessions on both sides it would appear that every household in the UK can expect to receive more junk mail in the future with the unions agreeing to abandon a three items of junk mail per household per week upper limit. So why can we expect more junk mail?
The Royal Mail is becoming ever more commercial and the need to attract more business and more income would seem to be paramount for the future success of the company. Junk mail, however annoying for customers, is a massive income stream in the commercial postal sector and Royal Mail seems to have reluctantly agreed to offer an inflation busting 6.9% increase in postal worker pay in exchange for this major concession.
Over the last few years we have seen new technology introduced into the post office at a time when many competitors have already adopted these new systems. While it will take time for the Royal Mail to fully introduce each and every piece of technology which it would like to use there is no doubt the Royal Mail we see today will be very different to the Royal Mail we will see in 10 years time.
