The City turns against Sir Stuart Rose

When Sir Stuart Rose joined the ranks of Marks & Spencer back in 2004 he received a welcome which few in the city have ever experienced. He was immediately put forward as the saviour of Marks & Spencer and indeed his forthright and straightforward approach to the company, after its past problems, seemed to be exactly what Marks & Spencer needed at the time. However, while initially the City had no problems with Stuart Rose having power across the company this did become a problem as the recovery began.

Slowly but surely as investors could see a path forward to the future and a recovery in the company's share price the initial successes which Stuart Rose enjoyed were quickly forgotten. As he refused to give up any of the power which he had gained from his initial appointment, his relationship with the City and analysts began to flounder. Now there is talk of a possible rights issue at Marks & Spencer, concerns that the company has lost its way and Stuart Rose's achievements of the past have been all but forgotten.

While there is no doubt that Stuart Rose has benefited financially from his time with Marks & Spencer many believe the company is entering a new era and his days with the bellwether of the UK retail sector may well be numbered.
