BT increases broadband investment to £2.5 billion
British Telecom has updated the city regarding its investment in the super plus broadband network and confirmed an increase from £1.5 billion to £2.5 billion. Initially it had been hoped that 40% of UK homes would receive superfast broadband by 2012 although the company has now increased this target to 66% of UK homes by 2015.
There is no doubt that the additional investment in the super fast broadband network will have a major impact on the UK broadband arena with consumers and businesses set to benefit. Many also believe we are on the verge of a new era for the UK TV sector with the proposed superfast broadband network able to support on demand digital TV and other services which have so far evaded the UK market.
As the new coalition government beds down in number 10 Downing Street it is unclear exactly what the policy will be with regards to the UK broadband industry as the Conservatives were looking at additional funding from the BBC licence fee while the Liberal Democrats were keen to introduce a Labour style broadband tax. Over the next few days we should hear confirmation of the forthcoming broadband policy for the new government.
